Where you sleep in Dubai decides how much of your trip you spend in taxis. The city runs along the coast, the beach districts are separate from the Burj Khalifa cluster, and the wrong base has you commuting past the things you came for. First, a quick orientation
Dubai is not a compact, walk-everywhere city. The main districts sit a 20 to 40 minute drive apart. So “where to stay” really means “what do you want within easy reach”: sand, skyline, or both.

Palm Jumeirah: resort island
The Palm is Dubai’s purpose-built beach-resort address: a fronded island of hotels, private beaches and headline restaurants. It’s the place to settle into one resort and let the holiday come to you.
- Best for: couples, families and anyone whose priority is a beach-and-pool holiday with standout dining a short hop away.
- The trade-off: it’s a self-contained island, not a walkable neighbourhood, and it isn’t on the Metro, so you’ll lean on taxis to leave it. That insularity is exactly the appeal for some visitors and a limitation for others.

Dubai Marina & JBR: walkable beach and skyline
If you want the most to do on foot, the Marina and the neighbouring beachfront strip of JBR are hard to beat: a yacht-lined waterfront, a beach, the Marina Walk promenade, and a dense run of restaurants and rooftops, all stitched together and connected to the rest of the city by Metro and tram.
- Best for: first-timers who want energy and variety without planning every outing, friends’ trips, and anyone who likes to stroll from beach to dinner.
- The trade-off: it’s busy and built-up: lively rather than serene.

Downtown: central and connected
Downtown is built around the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, with the fountain, the souk-style Dubai Mall district and a cluster of the city’s highest rooftop tables. It’s the most central and Metro-connected of the three, which makes it the easiest first base.
- Best for: first-time visitors, sightseers and short stays where you want the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall within reach and minimal transit friction.
- The trade-off: no beach. You’ll travel to the coast for sand.
